The FC DELCO Sting U16 girls participated in the inaugural Southern Soccer Showcase in Winston-Salem, NC this past April 12 & 13. Playing in the U17 Elite division, the Sting placed first in bracket play and played Braddock Run U17 Girls in the final. After going scoreless in regulation the teams went to Golden Goal overtime. Keeper Amanda McGowan made two key breakaway saves to preserve the chance to win it. Again playing scoreless in OT, it went to PK’s. McGowan stopped the first shot and set the tone for the finish. The second shooter missed the frame and the Sting girls rattled off four consecutive goals capped by Meghan Toohey’s finish to win the event. Aside from playing, the girls also had the opportunity to watch key ACC Women’s teams play on site at the BB&T Soccer Complex in a one day tournament. North Carolina women won the title game over North Carolina State. Other participants included Duke, Wake Forest, Clemson, and Virginia Tech. It was a great experience for the Sting to see these games and to come home winners.
